The Mexican Congress has enabled a digital portal for the extraordinary election of ministers, magistrates, and judges that will take place on June 1, 2025. According to the president of the Board of Directors of the Mexican Senate, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, 1,809 people have registered to participate in this process so far.
In this election, five female ministers and four male ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), three female magistrates and two male magistrates of the Judicial Discipline Tribunal, as well as one female magistrate and one male magistrate of the Superior Chamber of the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF) will be elected. Regional Chamber magistrates of the TEPJF, circuit judges, and district judges will also be selected.
The registration process for candidates will remain open until November 24, both on the digital portal and at the official reception of the chambers of the Mexican Congress, according to the call issued by the Legislative Power Evaluation Committee.
The reform to the Judiciary, promulgated on September 15 by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador and supported by the new president Claudia Sheinbaum, seeks to involve citizens in the election of judges. However, workers and members of the Judiciary have denounced the Executive's interference in Justice and point out that the ruling party Morena will promote its candidates in the judges' elections starting in June 2025.
